Trump Is Driving Socialism
What caused this move toward socialism? This wasn’t a topic during Obama’s tenure. Why now? Trump & his band of billionaires want only more money…while the rest of us want opportunity. So now suddenly “socialism” has become a political issue. Is it because three New York democrats running for Congress espoused ideas labeled as “socialism” were successful? No think about it! Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” cut the taxes for the wealthy and reduced Medicaid and food assistance for those less fortunate.
Wonder if the “Big Beautiful Bill” had an adverse impact on families, communities and the states have given Democrats something to campaign against. The legislation passed in Congress opened the door for Democrats to say they believe the Republican economic philosophy is what’s wrong with today’s Trump/Republican economic philosophy.
The question Democrats are asking is “are you better off financially because of what Trump/Republicans have done”? That means talking about such things as health-care costs, housing, wages, childcare, food prices, Medicaid and corporate power. That is where the socialism argument enters in the picture.
Republicans argue the Democrats answer to every problem is more government. And then comes the word “socialism” which can be politically effective because “socialism” has a stronger negative meaning with many voters. Even though most of the policies being discussed aren’t “socialism”. Such as Medicare, Social Security, public schools, or even a higher minimum wage.
The latest polling is interesting. A May Pew survey found Americans see health-care costs, inflation and the federal deficit as the country’s problems…The Wall Street Journal has reported Republicans are beginning to lose their traditional advantage over Democrats on who is better able to handle the economy. Voters remain frustrated by prices for necessities such as housing, utilities, healthcare and groceries.
You cannot write about socialism without looking inside the Democratic Party. There is a fight over how far left to go. One faction says not to frighten moderate and independent voters with the word socialism. Talk about affordability, jobs, wages and reducing costs. The other faction says the problem isn’t that were too progressive…the problem is that we’re not progressive enough. Voters are angry because the economic system has been tilted by Trump to the wealthy and corporations.
All the while Republicans are making socialism a major political weapon. The recent Democratic primary victories have given Trump/Republicans an opportunity to argue Democrats are moving toward socialism. This isn’t entirely a Republican-created issue. The Democratic Socialist of America has been growing, and candidates are increasingly willing to use the label “democratic socialist”.
