Four years ago, I watched the 2020 presidential certification process in sadness. Yesterday I watched the same process in joy. My reaction had nothing to do with the outcome of either election.
It had to do with sitting in my home watching the capitol where I worked being attacked and destroyed. Watching Members of the United States Congress running and hiding from their fellow Americans. It had to do knowing these thugs were there to put the reins of government into the hands of the IDOL. Being urged to “fight like hell” while the IDOL sat comfortably in the White House dining room watching the destruction.
While yesterday I witnessed a peaceful transfer of power as envisioned in the Constitution. Seeing a Vice President who had lost the presidential election gracefully presided over a joint session of Congress. It was a process taking less than an hour to proclaim her opponent had won the 2024 election to become the 47th President of the United States. There was cheering and joy rather anger and destruction. It could have been different.
What I took away from these proceedings and the quiet nature of the day was how hard all of us must work to ensure there is never a repeat of 2020. However, each January 6th we must pause, reflect and remember.
Is our political system broken…yes. Do both parties need to ask themselves are we doing our job for the American people…yes. Are our representatives who participated in yesterday certification going to be told what to do…rather than promoting and voting on the principles enshrined in our Declaration of Independents and the Constitution…let’s hope so.
