Broken
Is the Republican Party deeply divided, in transition or simply “broken”? Is the Democratic Party badly troubled or broken to the point where it cannot recover?
No doubt the old Republican Party is clearly busted. For decades the GOP was built around limited government, lower taxes, strong national defense, free markets and fiscal restraint. Trump has changed today’s Republican coalition to be focused on immigration, border enforcement, tariffs, cultural issues, distrust of institutions and “America First” foreign policy. And let’s not forget destruction of The White House, painting the reflecting pool and closing the Kennedy Center.
Political parties have changed but change can and does produce serious internal conflicts. There are several competing Republicans today. MAGA followers want Trump to continue transforming the party. However, traditional conservatives are more concerned about deficits, government spending, free markets and America’s traditional foreign-policy role.
Turning to the badly troubled Democratic Party, it is not “broken” in the sense that it cannot recover. The biggest problem is Democrats don’t have a clear identity, The competing factions include Progressives, Moderates and Establishment.
Progressives want a major expansion of government programs, stronger economic populism, and more aggressive positions on issues such as immigration and Israel. Moderates worry that those positions make Democrats unacceptable to independents and swing voters. Establishment Democrats generally want to preserve the existing coalitions and leadership structure. The 2026 primaries haven’t settled or bridged these troubling questions & demands.
Is it possible Democrats could move toward the center and emphasize wages, affordability, small business and fiscal responsivity? Not to be forgotten Republicans are working hard to label virtually any expansion of government as “socialism.”
Americans are unhappy with both parties. Democrats don’t necessarily have to become more liberal to recover. They could just say “Government should work better, cost less, and concentrate on things ordinary American need. That would be a very different message from simply saying “we are not Trump.” As for Republicans they may have to wait until the 2028 presidential candidate is selected to see what they stand for.
Finally, let’s not forget the make-up of Congress after the 2026 election will play an important role in determining if the “party is over”…or which one survives the 2028 presidential election.
