Uncertainty
Governor Ron DeSantis future is uncertain. Marc Caputo, a nationally respected Axios reporter with tight Florida connections wrote last week DeSantis is begging President Trump for a job. DeSantis leaves office in January 2027 without a landing spot.
This morning DeSantis indicated he will seek to redistrict the Florida congressional seats in hopes of electing five new Republicans. Nothing would please President Trump more…as he is frightened of losing control of Congress.
Such a victory should land the outgoing Florida Governor a place in the Trump administration…of course it’s not The White House…he so covets.
When decision time comes what to do with Ron DeSantis one must not lose sight that the powerful presidential Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles…is no fan.
It’s doubtful Secretary of State Marco Rubio (a Floridian) or Vice President J. D. Vance would be pulling for DeSantis to arrive in a high-level position. Both are being talked about as the future of the Republican party.
There are current Florida Republican Congressmen who fear changing district lines now could make some GOP incumbents more vulnerable. Doubt they are crazy about DeSantis messing up their future.
Not to be forgotten is Florida’s Fair Districts constitutional amendments, which prohibit lawmakers from deliberately drawing districts that help or hurt a party or incumbents. Look for a lawsuit. Likely, DeSantis is counting on the Florida Supreme Court which last year upheld the GOP-friendly map that he and state lawmakers adopted in 2022. DeSantis appointed six of the seven members of the court.
Depending on the results of all of this…Florida may once again be a factor in the 2028 presidential election.
