Vice presidential debate watchers got exactly what they expected from JD Vance, a slick debate educated politician, and Tim Walz, a genuine person.  The contrast was Vance who sold himself to his billionaire friends to buy a seat in the U. S. Senate and Governor Tim Walz who built a reputation as a congressman, teacher and coach.

The debate was not about them but their running mates.  Vance and Walz were just stand-ins for Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.  However, it appeared Vance was working on repairing his own image.  While Walz a former Coach, was pumping up the team.  More substance was covered than normally in these debates.  Three matters stood out.

First, Vance found himself defending his past criticism of Trump calling him “America’s Hitler” and for criticizing Trump’s economic record.  Vance placed the blame on his misunderstanding of media stories.  He they were “dishonest fabrications.”

Secondly, the topic of healthcare…is important to Americans.  Vance tried to rewrite Trump’s history of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) saying Trump had rescued it.  Vance further stated Trump could have destroyed the program and worked in a bipartisan way to ensure that Americans had access to affordable care.  That was a hot button fabrication for Walz.

Walz said if the Affordable Care Act had been rescinded, insurance subsidies and prohibitions on charging higher prices along with pre-existing conditions would have been gone.  Trump’s Executive actions to cut funding for the program and asking the Supreme Court to end the ACA entirety failed.  When the Senate had a chance to act…one vote saved it…that was the late Senator John McCain.

Finally, democracy took center stage near the end of the evening.  Gov. Walz asked Sen. Vance did Trump lose to Joe Biden?  Vance refused to acknowledge that Joe Biden fairly won the presidency.  Denying the truth is freighting.

Maybe this election the candidates for Vice President will make a difference.
