Six months ago, Americans watched the most dysfunctional Congress I can recall. Republicans after becoming the majority party in the House of Representatives booted their speaker out of office. The fighting got so bad it was obvious a fix was needed. We wrote a post saying it was time to experiment with a “coalition government” in the House. As broken as the political system is in our country, I had little hope a coalition of Republicans and Democrats could take place.
It took a little-known Congressman Mike Johnson (R.LA) as Speaker to take on the experiment. He tested the experiment when faced with a government shutdown, national security issues and obtaining desperately needed assistance for Ukraine. It worked. Democrats joined with Republicans.
In years gone by Republicans and Democrats always worked together to meet the goals & objectives of the American people. Unfortunately, those days are behind us…unless Johnson’s “coalition government” can hold until more reasonable people come to Congress.
Why do I say that? Because Speaker Johnson after showing he is willing to put our country first is under attacked by hard-right House Republicans. They are threatening to depose Johnson for “…a sellout of America.” Though he went to Mar-a-Lago and left thinking he had the support of Trump. However, son Donald, Jr. and other known Trump supporters are unhappy he moved ahead with the security legislation. Stephen K. Bannon a Trump adviser said on his right-wing podcast “He’s not met the Moment…and must go just like Kevin McCarthy.”
I believe Speaker Johnson must stay to show “coalition government” works to the benefit of America.
