Have We Met?

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

The bruising GOP presidential primary has come to an end.  The real Mitt Romney is reflected in his “A Better America Begins Tonight” speech last evening.  Below are a few excerpts from POLITICO.  The full text is included.

–FROM ROMNEY’S SPEECH last night in Manchester, “A Better America Begins Tonight”: “Tonight is the start of a new campaign to unite every American who knows in their heart that we can do better! The last few years have been the best that Barack Obama can do, but it’s not the best America can do! … This has already been a long campaign, but many Americans are just now beginning to focus on the choice before the country. In the days ahead, I look forward to spending time with many of you personally. I want to hear what’s on your mind, hear about your concerns, and learn about your families. I want to know what you think we can do to make this country better…and what you expect from your next President.

“And I’ll tell you a little bit about myself. I’ll probably start out talking about my wonderful wife Ann – I usually do – and I’ll probably bore you with stories about our kids and grandkids. I’ll tell you about how much I love this country, where someone like my dad, who grew up poor and never graduated from college, could pursue his dreams and work his way up to running a great car company. Only in America could a man like my dad become governor of the state in which he once sold paint from the trunk of his car.

“I’d say that you might have heard that I was successful in business. And that rumor is true. But you might not have heard that I became successful by helping start a business that grew from 10 people to hundreds of people. You might not have heard that our business helped start other businesses, like Staples and Sports Authority and a new steel mill and a learning center called Bright Horizons. And I’d tell you that not every business made it and there were good days and bad days, but every day was a lesson. And after 25 years, I know how to lead us out of this stagnant Obama economy and into a job-creating recovery!

“Four years ago, Barack Obama dazzled us in front of Greek columns with sweeping promises of hope and change. But after we came down to earth, after the celebration and parades, what do we have to show for three and a half years of President Obama? Is it easier to make ends meet? Is it easier to sell your home or buy a new one? Have you saved what you needed for retirement? Are you making more in your job? Do you have a better chance to get a better job? Do you pay less at the pump? … There was a time – not so long ago – when each of us could walk a little taller and stand a little straighter … Those days are coming back. That’s our destiny.” Full text http://mi.tt/IDj3qp

What’s Their Problem with Romney?

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

(Editor’s Note:  In the interest of full disclosure I am involved with Gov. Romney’s WV efforts.)

A North Carolina friend emailed me a recent column by Ann Coulter regarding Governor Mitt Romney.  A personal comment in their email was on target.  They wrote, “Praying that we don’t give this election away while some Republicans are waiting for Reagan to come back from the dead.”

What’s Their Problem with Romney?

As governor of one of the most liberal states in the union, Mitt Romney did something even Ronald Regan didn’t do as governor of California:  He balanced the budget without raising taxes.  Read the full column here.

Obama Greeted In Boston With Misery Index

Obama Misery Index hits a record high

BOSTON HERALD

The unemployment rate has just fallen one-tenth of a percent, from 9 percent to 8.9 percent. Of course, it is indeed progress, and it is being celebrated in the White House as such. But the celebrations bring to mind what a wit once said: An “acceptable” level of unemployment means that the government economist to whom it is acceptable still has a job. Today, as we move into the third year of the Obama administration, we do not have anything resembling even such an “acceptable” level of unemployment. Far from it. As of this month, 14 million Americans can’t find work.

When Ronald Reagan ran for president in 1980, he hung the Misery Index around Jimmy Carter’s neck. It consisted of the sum total of unemployment and inflation. Today, we have a different set of ailments. Instead of unemployment coupled with inflation, we have a toxic blend of unemployment, debt, home foreclosures, and bankruptcies. Their sum total is what we can call the Obama Misery Index. It is at a record high; indeed, it makes even the malaise of the Carter years look like a boom. Unemployment has fallen, but it’s fallen to a level that is still, by any historical marker, a national disaster. To suggest it as an achievement is to engage in what Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously called “defining deviancy down.”

Where should we go from here? Having spent my career in the private sector, I know a thing or two about how jobs are created and how they are lost. The most important lesson I learned is that there are three rules of every successful turnaround: focus, focus, and focus. Turnarounds work when the leader focuses on what’s most important. President Obama did just the opposite: he delegated the jobs crisis to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and he went to work on his own priorities, like cap and trade and government-run health care.

I hope we don’t have to wait two years for a new president to fix things, but I fear we might. What the occupant of the Oval Office needs to do, and do now, is focus on getting Americans back to work.

Take taxes. Our employers pay the highest rates in the world, tied with Japan, and higher than such societies top-heavy with government as Italy and France. Our small companies are hit particularly hard. If employers are going to start investing and hiring, we must reduce the burden. We can offset the lost revenue by ruthlessly eliminating corporate loopholes and the special deals that reward political influence and punish productivity. We also need to stop taxing companies that make money overseas if they want to bring it home. Encouraging companies to keep money abroad makes zero sense. As much as one trillion dollars kept abroad may be at stake; a sum that size invested here would create hundreds of thousands — or even millions — of good, permanent, private-sector jobs.

Our out-of-control fiscal policies are also impinging directly on the labor market. The failed stimulus program cost around $800 billion. Obamacare is going to cost another trillion. The denizens of the White House appear not to know it, but employers and entrepreneurs worry a good deal about the federal deficit and the federal debt. They look at the future and see that the government’s spending binge will mean higher taxes, higher interest rates, and a much weaker dollar.

All these things are the direct enemy of long-term investment. The climate of uncertainty they create has an indirect but no less damaging effect on confidence. Historically, federal spending has ranged between 18 and 20 percent of GDP. Today it has soared to near 25 percent. If we want our politicians to end their free-spending ways, we need to establish an iron-clad ceiling on federal spending, setting it at a fixed percent of the GDP.

These proposals may sound wonkish, but let’s keep in mind what is at stake. Behind the unemployment statistics is a lot of heartbreak. Unemployment means children who can’t go to college; marriages that break up under the financial strain; young people who can’t find jobs and start their lives; and men and women in their fifties, in the prime of their lives, who fear they will never work again. Then there are the job fairs where thousands of people are showing up to compete for a few openings that probably are not as good as the jobs they held two years ago.

Unless President Obama changes course, these job fairs, with their day-long lines of unemployed seeking nothing more than a chance to earn a living, are going to be seen as his Hoovervilles. “I’m the only person of distinction who has ever had a depression named for him,” President Hoover once ruefully complained. Obamanomics, which at extraordinary cost has accomplished extraordinarily little, is earning our president his own dubious place in our history books.

Governor’s Race?

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Robins have returned…the birds are singing…where are the 14 gubernatorial  candidates…likely scrambling for funds…but this race will not be won on TV…unless the campaign gets negative…likely for Democrats…unlikely for Republicans…the smart candidates are quietly working in the field.

There are more fireworks between the chairs of both parties than in the Governor’s race…GOP Chair Mike Stuart attack Democrat lawmakers…Dem Chair Larry Puccio shot back…will be fun to watch…Stuart with little political experience and Puccio a pro.

Americans are clamoring for a national debate on the federal budget…it is underway… a survey revealed most Americans understand little about the federal budget…it is depressing…check it out.

New leadership for the WV Democratic Legislative Council…Nick Casey will be General Chairman…House Speaker Thompson & Acting Senate President Kessler…must be taking steps to gear up early for the 2012 legislative races…Casey knows his stuff.

Candidates Betty Ireland [Republican] and John Perdue [Democrat] appear the most active…Ireland is the first name that comes up in random conversations with Republicans…and Perdue is putting up yard signs…even in snow covered Randolph County…the two were in a dead heat when Public Policy Polling released finding in January.

NO TAKERS in Republican presidential race…Gingrich was at the altar but only announced a web site…Huckabee made news talking about Obama’s background…. but is planning an Alaska cruise in June…Palin is going to India…Mitt Romney is in New Hampshire.

Caught by surprise…a straw poll that it appears no one knew about…and it was a Charleston Democratic Executive Committee fundraiser…State Treasurer Perdue won…the value of this small victory was one story…the downside for Perdue…the other candidates have been put on notice.

A pass along…the text of Governor Romney Lincoln Day address in Carroll County, New Hampshire.

UNDERWOOD interns are preparing for another summer…information from Shane Wilson @304.539.0694.

Valerie Phillips from a Texas-based political consulting firm…named to run Betty Ireland’s campaign…little heard from by the other GOP candidates…Bill Maloney has sent a couple news releases…Clark Barnes is competing with Democrat John Perdue for the most yard signs in Randolph County.

Will the 2011 Legislative session end as planned…one week after March 12th has been set aside for the budget…may be the two leaders…Thompson & Kessler will decide to postpone important decisions…until after the May primary…come back and do the budget…who would this help the most…their campaigns for Governor!

THE CALL WAS ANSWERED…the Legislature took no further action to award WV’s electoral votes to the presidential candidate…who wins the national popular vote…the proposal would have nearly ended WV’s influence in these elections.

Romney Questions Tax Deal

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Governor Mitt Romney has authored a thoughtful piece in USA Today regarding the tax cut deal now under consideration in Congress.  He writes President Obama’s tax cut deal fails to deliver it full potential for creating lasting growth.  Governor Romney believes a more conservative Congress should work on a better and more effective stimulus in the next year.

Obama Should Listen to Mitt Romney

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

An unexpected Op Ed authored by Governor Romney appeared in The Washington Post this morning.  No doubt everyone needs a break from politics.  However, the counsel being offered by Mitt Romney should be heeded by President Obama, current Members of Congress and those who will be entering in January.

This is a must read.
